Otto Freundlich (1878 – 1943) was a German painter and sculptor of Jewish origin. A part of the first generation of abstract painters in Western art, Freundlich was a great admirer of cubism.

Freundlich was born in Stolp, Province of Pomerania, Prussia. His mother was a first cousin of the writer Samuel Lublinski. Otto studied dentistry before deciding to become an artist. He went to Paris in 1908, living in Montmartre in Bateau Lavoir near to Pablo Picasso, Braque and others. In 1914 he returned to Germany. In 1924 he moved to Paris. In later years his work was considered ‘Entartete’ by the nazi’s. On 09-03-1943 the arrival day he was murdered in concentration camp Majdanek.

Otto Freundlich (Stolp (Pommeren), 1878Majdanek, 1943) was een Duitse schilder, graficus en beeldhouwer van Joodse afkomst. Hij was een der eerste vertegenwoordigers van de abstracte kunst.

Freundlich ging in 1902, na diverse eerdere studies (waaronder een tandartsopleiding), kunstgeschiedenis studeren in München en Berlijn bij Heinrich Wölfflin. Na zijn studie schreef hij zijn eerste artikelen in tijdschriften en besloot kunstenaar te worden. Vanaf 1908 tot 1914 verbleef hij in Parijs en woonde in Montmartre onder één dak met jonge, opkomende kunstenaars als Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque en anderen. In 1911 ontstonden zijn eerste abstracte werken.

In 1914 gaat hij terug naar Duitsland om in 1924 weer naar Parijs te verhuizen. Zijn werk zou later door de nazi’s als Entartete kunst bestempeld worden. Hij werd in het concentratiekamp Majdanek op 9 maart 1943, de dag van zijn aankomst, vermoord
