Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc (1880 – 1916) was a German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a journal whose name later became synonymous with the circle of artists collaborating in it.
His mature works mostly depict animals, and are known for bright colouration. The Cubism movement made him simplify his shapes. This work is called abstract expressionism.
One of the most well-known examples of Marc’s cubist paintings, The Fox is a wonderful example of a typical Marc piece. Breaking down realistic, natural forms into abstract, prismatic forms in bold colours.

Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc (1880 – 1916) was een Duits expressionistisch kunstschilder. Hij was een van de oprichters van de kunstenaarsbeweging De Blaue Reiter. Hij werd vooral bekend om zijn schilderijen van dieren en zijn levendig kleurgebruik. Onder invloed van het kubisme vereebvoudigden zijn vormen sterk. Dit wordt wel het abtract expressionisme genoemd.
De Vossen is een goed voorbeeld van het kubisme van Franz Marc. De werkelijkheid/natuur wordt teruggebracht tot abstracte, prisma-achtige vormen in sterke kleuren.
